Question 16: Hidden Word

Change the first letter of each word to the left and right of the blank space.  Two other English words must be found.  Write the letter you used in the blank space.  When this has been completed for all the words, the letters in the blank spaces (when ordered properly) will spell a synonym of CANCEL.  What is this word?

EXAMPLE

GEL   E   FAST EEL EAST
TRAVEL   G   BRUNT GRAVEL GRUNT
VALID   P   GRIME PALID PRIME

OMIT       SAVE   MIT   AVE
DEVOLVE       DEBATE   EVOLVE   EBATE
SILT       RIND   ILT   IND
AVERT       ALIVE   VERT   LIVE
PLATE       WAGER   LATE   AGER
LENT       PALE   ENT   ALE

Answer:

REVOKE

Thanks to email correspondent Peter Castine for this one.  I had a solution I wasn't too happy about (E, R, M, O, E, V: "Remove") because it depended on "milt" which isn't a very common word -- the dictionary lists it as either a variant of "melt" or the secretion of the male reproductive glands of fish, used in breeding.  Peter came to my rescue, suggesting "K" where I had "M" (E, R, K, O, E, V: "Revoke") which is better because KILT and KIND are more common words, and "Revoke" is a good synonym of "Cancel".

OMIT   E   SAVE EMIT EAVE
DEVOLVE   R   DEBATE REVOLVE REBATE
SILT   K   RIND KILT KIND
AVERT   O   ALIVE OVERT OLIVE
PLATE   E   WAGER ELATE EAGER
LENT   V   PALE VENT VALE
