You are given two carpets of dimensions 8-by-8 and 6-by-1. Your task is to
make a carpet of dimensions 7 by 10. You are only allowed to cut the
8-by-8 carpet into two pieces. How do you make the cut so that the three
carpet pieces can be put together to form the required carpet?
Cut the carpet along the lines as shown. Pull the orange and blue
parts apart.
Put them together as shown, and stick the green carpet in the gap between
the orange and blue pieces.
